he last of the prophets, Muhammad SAW said
“ Strange is the affair of the Mu’min ( the believer), verily all his affairs are good for him. If something pleasing befalls him , he thanks Allah SWT and it becomes better for him, And if something harmful befalls him, he is patient ( Sabr ) and it becomes better for him. And this is only for the Mu’min. “
Ali bin Abi Talib (r.a ) , the Fourth Rightly Guided Caliph of Darul Islam , said
“ Verily Sabr is to Imaan what the head is to body . When the head is cut off , the body falls. ( He then raised his voice) . Verily there is no Imaan for he has no Sabr ( patience ) .”
There are three type of Sabr that the Muslim should have :
a) Sabr in the obedience of Allah SWT
e.g one must be patient and perform his/her Fajr on time.
b) Sabr in not disobeying Allah SWT.
E.g. someone might say “ I just have to insult him”. This impulse must not be followed for as we are commanded by He who gave us our tongues not to follow the whisper of Syaitan , the accursed. Thus , we must have Sabr in not disobeying Allah SWT
c) Sabr in what Allah SWT decrees upon us ,
e.g if our child was to pass away , we should be patient and seek the reward of Allah SWT in our patience abd say only that which is pleasing to Him
There are two keys, which if we understand them shall open the door of Sabr in our lives
1st Key : Know that our soul , families and wealth do not belong to us , they belong to Allah SWT. He gave them to us as a loan to see what we would do with them. And when He takes them back He is actually taking back what belongs to Him. We had nothing before the Blessings and we will have nothing after that. We did not create the Blessings from nothing, so how can we claim that it belongs to us.
2nd Key: We are on a journey and the destination is the Hereafter – Jannah or Hell. We shall be leaving the world behind us and we are returning to Allah swt alone, accompanied only by our deeds. That is our sole focus, and if Allah SWT is pleased with us, then no worry. But if He is not pleased with us , then it is a true worry.
In the Holy Qur’an Allah SWT commands : Guard strictly the ( fine obligatory ) prayers, especially the middle Solaah and stand before Allah in obedience. [ Al- Baqarah , 2: 238 ] . Please note that the verses before this, deals with divorce and so do the verse after it. Why then this verse were placed in the middle ? The Ulema have suggested that in the hard times that a person goes through ( especially following a divorce ) they should not forget the remembrance of Allah swt through Solaah. It is the solaah coupled with sabr that will help he or she pull through the turbulent period. Allah SWT knows best !.

Another Divine verse states “ O you who believe ! Seek Help in Patience and Sollah. Truly , Allah is with those that are patient” [ Al-Baqarah 2: 153 ]
Allah SWR want to pass on the following good news to us : “ And give the good news to the patient who , when afflicated with calamity say, ‘ Truly, to Allah we belong and truly to Him we shall return. “ They are those on whom the Salawat ( i.e. the blessing and forgiveness ) of their Lord is upon them and who shall receive His Mercy and it is they who are guided ones “ [ Al-Baqarah , 2: 157 ]
As you and I travel through life, we find ourselves in one of two situations. Either something good is happening in our lives and in which case as Muslims, our role is to thank Allah SWT for the Blessing. Or something bad is happening to us , something we dislike and our role here is to patient ( Sabr ). This is the formula for happy life, a life cruising towards the pleasure of Allah SWT. Sabr or Shukr – the worry stops here.
The scholar, Ibn Al-Jowzee said : “ if this Dunya , was not a station of tests it would not be filled with sickness and filth. If life were not about hardship, then the Prophets ( a.s ) and the pious would live the most comfortable of lives. Nay, Adam suffered test after test until he left the Dunya. Nuh cried for 300 years , Ibrahim was thrown into a pit of fire and later told to slaughter his son. Yaqub cried until he become blind. Musa challenged firaun and was tested by his people. Isa had no provision except the morsels his disciples provided with him. And Mohammed SAW met poverty with patience, his uncle Hamzah Abdul Mutalib ( r.a ) was slain and multilated; and his people disbelieved him ,and the list of Prophets and the pious goes on and on.
AbdulRahman ibn Awf (r.a. ) a companion of Prophet SAW said “ We were tested with hardship and were patient. And then we were tested with prosperity and we were not patient”
Allah SWT reminds us of this test : “ O ye who believe ! Let now your wealth or your children divert you from the remembrance of Allah . And whosoever does that, then they are losers. “ [ Al-Munafiqun , 63: 9 ]
Patience must happen from the beginning at the first news of the calamity, not one day later or three days later. The Prophet SAW said: “Verily patience (is only Sabr when practiced) at the first hit (of news) “
There are several things that contradict Sabr, such as tearing one’s shirt , slapping one’s face , slapping hands, shaving one’s head and cursing and wailing. Umm Salamah ( r.a. ) narrated “ I heard Prophet Muhammad SAW say : Any Muslim says when calamity befalls on him, that which Allah commanded him : To Allah we belong and to Him we return. O Allah, reward me in this calamity and give me better then it ( ay Muslim that say this ) Allah will grant him better than ( that which he lost ) “ [ Muslim ]
Aisyah ( r.a. ) said “ These tests and hardships wash our sins. Verily fever sheds sins like a tree sheds leaves “ . Allah SWT says in the Quran “ Alif Laam Meem … Do people think that they will be left alone because they say “ We believe “ and not be tested ? Indeed We tested those who ( lived ) before them “ [Al-Ankaboot 29: 1-3 ]
In conclusion, please know that Allah SWT promised anyone who wants to work on his/her patience three things : Forgiveness, Mercy and Guidance. Who could ask for more ?
